9 popular low-profile baitcasters from Abu Garcia, Daiwa and Shimano, sorted by manufacturer price. Use the table to match a reel to your technique. For example, faster gear ratios (8:1+) suit picking up slack on flipping and worm rods, slower ratios (5–6:1) suit deep cranking, and higher line capacity suits big swimbaits and heavy braid.

How to choose a baitcaster for Texas lakes
- Gear ratio: about 7:1 is the versatile middle ground. Go faster for flipping, pitching, Texas rigs and frogs, slower for deep crankbaits.
- Drag: 11–15 lb is plenty for most bass fishing. More drag mainly matters with heavy braid around cover.
- Size: compact 70/100-size reels are comfortable to palm all day. 150/200 sizes hold more heavy line for big baits and deep water.
- Brakes: if you're new to baitcasters or fish in wind (common on big Texas reservoirs), backlash-resistant systems (SV spools, DC) make life easier.
