For a city pond, a stocked Neighborhood Fishin' lake or a dock, you don't need much: one ready-to-fish spinning combo (rod and reel sold together), a few hooks and weights, and bait. This page compares 4 combos with the specs each maker publishes.

- Small kids: a short rod is easier to hold and control. The Dock Runner (36") and GX2 Youth (5'6") are the shortest here.
- Teens and adults: a 6' to 6'6" medium rod like the GX2 casts farther and still handles pond catfish and trout.
- Mostly catfish: the Catfish Spinning Combo is heavier (7' medium heavy) for bigger fish and heavier weights.
The rest of the setup
- Line: 6 to 10 lb monofilament is easy to tie and forgiving. Check the line rating printed on your rod.
- Hooks: a small pack of bait hooks, small for trout baits like corn and cheese, a bit larger for catfish baits.
- Weights and a bobber: a few split shot and a couple of small floats. Fish the bait on the bottom, or hang it under the bobber so kids can see the bite.
- Lures (optional): TPWD suggests a small inline spinner or a spoon for winter trout.
- Bait: TPWD's picks are nightcrawlers, chicken livers, shrimp, stinkbait or cut hot dogs for catfish, and cheese, kernel corn, nightcrawlers, red wigglers or meal worms for trout.
- Pliers and a towel make unhooking fish easier, and a small cooler with ice keeps fish you plan to eat.
Bait and lure suggestions: TPWD: Neighborhood Fishin'. TPWD's free Learn to Fish videos show how to tie a knot, rig and cast. Remember the rules: at Neighborhood Fishin' ponds it's pole and line only, two poles per person, and 5 fish a day in total. Kids under 17 don't need a license (pond rules).
Next: find a stocked pond near you, or see more crappie, catfish and striper gear.
